Malaria is a serious disease caused by the transmission of Plasmodium, parasitic protozoa, into the body through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The most common types of Plasmodium in India are the P. Vivax and P. Falciparum. The Anopheles mosquitoes spread these parasites through their spit. Since the parasite resides in the red blood cells, Malaria is also commonly spread through blood donation, organ transplants, and other such medical procedures.
Symptoms of Malaria in India
Once bitten by an infected mosquito, it may take 1 to 4 weeks for the disease to show. In some rare cases, the parasite may stay dormant for as long as a year and can recur over a period of time. Commonly observed symptoms of Malaria in India are:
High fever
Initially, Malaria may feel like the regular flu. However, if the fever runs high in periods of 2-3 days, then it’s advisable to get a blood test done as it is a typical symptom of Malaria.
Headache
A Malaria patient may suffer from headaches caused due to the infection or by the antimalarial medication itself.
Muscle pain
Like any other fever, muscle pain in Malaria is extreme. Back ache is also very common. Muscle pain makes it difficult for kids to even sit straight.
Severe chills
The periodical waves of fever in Malaria are accompanied by severe chills, where the person may feel extremely cold in normal temperatures.
Heavy sweating
Just like the chills, heavy sweating is an extreme symptom of Malaria which causes abnormal sweating in normal temperatures.
Fatigue
Tiredness paired with muscle pain causes extreme fatigue in patients. It will be advisable to get rest during the fever.
Nausea
The constant feeling of wanting to vomit is a very common exhibit of the Malaria fever. If you feel extremely nauseous with your fever, visit a doctor immediately.
Dry cough
If you observe a dry cough with all the other symptoms, waste no time and get a medical test done.
Loose motions
This is a very common symptom in kids suffering from Malaria. Runny stools and loss of appetite can cause a lot of discomfort and pain.
The infection caused by Plasmodium Falciparum can cause potentially fatal problems like kidney failure, coma, mental disorientation, enlarged spleen and so on. Malaria can also have side effects like Anaemia and Jaundice. Instances of Malaria are very common in India.
